Japan’s Climate and the Best Seasons for Travel
Japan’s climate is characterized by distinct four seasons, each with its own unique charm.
The diversity of the four seasons is one reason why you can enjoy a wide variety of natural beauty and culture throughout Japan.
Spring (March–May): This is the season when cherry blossoms are in full bloom, attracting many visitors who come to enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Early April, when the cherry blossoms are at their peak, is a highlight of traveling in Japan. The temperatures are relatively mild, making it an ideal season for going out.
Summer (June–August): June is mainly the rainy season, with high humidity and many rainy days from June to early July. By August, the heat reaches its peak. However, this period is also attractive for travelers seeking cultural experiences, as many summer festivals and fireworks events are held. Hokkaido and highland areas remain cool and are popular as summer retreats.
Autumn (September–November): This is the season of stunning autumn foliage. From late October to November, mountains and gardens across the country are painted in vibrant reds and golds. The weather is cool and comfortable, making it one of the most pleasant seasons for travelers. However, in recent years, September has also seen high temperatures, with summer-like hot days continuing.
Winter (December–February): This is the season for enjoying winter sports in places like Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps. Visiting hot spring resorts and relaxing in the snowy scenery is also a major attraction. However, it is important to be prepared for severe cold in northern Japan and mountainous areas.
The best season varies depending on your purpose, but generally, spring and autumn are the most popular. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms, and in autumn, the beautiful autumn foliage—both iconic aspects of Japan's natural beauty. Many travelers tend to choose these seasons for their visits. By considering the unique charms of each season and choosing the timing that best suits your goals, you can enjoy a more fulfilling trip.

Average Temperature and Precipitation in Japan (Tokyo)

    Average temperature and precipitation

    Japan Meteorological Agency(https://www.jma.go.jp/jma/indexe.html)

    Cash, cards and currency exchange
Credit cards are widely accepted in Japan, but cash may be required at small shops or in rural areas. While card payments are convenient in major cities and tourist destinations, it's a good idea to have some cash on hand as well.
You can exchange cash at airports, banks, and currency exchange offices in major cities. A convenient option is to withdraw cash using an overseas-issued card at ATMs in post offices or convenience stores. Japanese coins and bills are easy to use and especially handy for small purchases or vending machines.
    Tips
There is no tipping culture in Japan.
    Public order
Japan is renowned for being one of the safest countries in the world, making it a very secure destination for travelers. The crime rate is low, and you can use public transportation and visit tourist spots with peace of mind. Lost items are often returned, and the kindness of local people is another appealing aspect. While walking around at night is generally safe, it's still wise to stay aware of your surroundings just in case.
    clothing
What you wear when traveling in Japan depends on the season and the region you visit.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have mild temperatures, so light jackets and layered clothing are convenient.
Summer (June to August) is hot and humid, so breathable clothing is recommended. It's also a good idea to bring a light jacket for air-conditioned indoor spaces.
Winter (December to February) varies in coldness depending on the region. In northern Japan and mountainous areas, you'll need a heavy coat and warm gear.
Since you'll be walking a lot at tourist sites and temples or shrines, comfortable shoes are recommended. Also, be aware that there are dress codes at religious sites and hot springs in Japan, so it's a good idea to check them in advance if needed.
    Things you should bring
Folding umbrella or raincoat: The weather can change quickly, so be prepared for the rainy season or sudden summer showers.
Stomach medicine, cold medicine, and any regular medications: Please bring them if needed. You can also buy them at Japanese pharmacies, but the selection may be limited.
Power plug adapter: Japan uses Type A outlets (100V), so you'll need an adapter for overseas electronic devices.
    Visa availability and arrangements
Visa requirements vary by country, so please check the website of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or similar sources for details.

    Required vaccinations
There are no mandatory requirements for entry.
