Cash, cards and currency exchange

The local currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar. At the same time, US dollars are widely accepted everywhere, so it is recommended to bring US dollars as cash from Japan, as they are easy to exchange.

Visa and MasterCard are accepted at major hotels and stores. However, many places still do not accept JCB, so please be aware.

Tips

Tipping culture exists in Jordan.
Unusually, tipping is required for using restrooms. It is said to be about $1 for two people.
Additionally, it is recommended to give a tip of about $1–2 when you have a driver, someone helps with your luggage, or you request any service at a hotel.

Visa availability and arrangements

There is no visa waiver agreement between Japan and Jordan, but if you enter with a Japanese passport, you can obtain a 30-day stay permit (visa on arrival) free of charge at the airport or border office upon entry. Please note that your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining and at least two unused visa pages at the time of entry.

Required vaccinations

There are no mandatory requirements for travel.

However, if you are participating in the Hajj, you will be required to present certificates of vaccination against meningococcal meningitis and seasonal influenza.

Although Jordan has a relatively liberal atmosphere compared to other countries in the Middle East, it is a nation where the majority of the population is Muslim. It is advisable to understand and respect their religious rules and values.

In addition to being mindful of clothing and culture, it is important to understand and observe these customs during religious events such as Hajj and Ramadan.
Regarding alcohol consumption, the region is relatively tolerant compared to other parts of the Middle East. However, causing a disturbance in public places, such as being intoxicated and shouting loudly, may result in penalties. Additionally, during Ramadan (the month of fasting), most hotels and restaurants that usually serve alcohol refrain from selling alcoholic beverages.
