El Salvador is a small country in Central America and the only one in the region that does not border the Caribbean Sea. It is home to many volcanoes, rich natural beauty, and a culture that dates back to ancient times.
People have lived in this land since before the Common Era, and at the Joya de Cerén archaeological site—a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserved by repeated volcanic eruptions—you can see what a pre-Columbian Maya farming village looked like. In the country's second-largest city, Santa Ana, you'll find the beautiful Santa Ana Cathedral and the Santa Ana Volcano, which you can reach the crater of in about an hour with a tour. From the summit of Santa Ana Volcano, you can see Cerro Verde and Izalco volcanoes up close, offering breathtaking natural scenery. For a break from the heat and humidity, Lake Coatepeque is a popular resort with affordable marine activities. And don't forget the capital, San Salvador, with its many museums and striking architecture like the Iglesia El Rosario.
Experience an extraordinary journey in El Salvador, a vibrant Latin American country with a climate and culture very different from Japan.
If you ask your local coordinator about anything you're unsure of and have your wishes arranged in a custom-made itinerary, you're sure to enjoy a truly special trip just for you.

I worked in Guatemala for 10 years as a cultural and public relations officer at the Japanese Embassy in Guatemala. Building connections in Guatemala, my husband Shingo Matsumoto and I established a travel agency approved by the tourism bureau in January 2004 to introduce the charms of Guatemala to more Japanese people. With qualifications as a travel business manager and a guide approved by the Guatemalan Tourism Bureau, I have been involved in the travel industry for over 30 years. We will deliver the charms of Guatemala and Central America to your heart's content!
What kind of country is El Salvador?
Discover the real El Salvador. (Experience Report)
Things you might be curious about when traveling to El Salvador.
- Cash, cards and currency exchange
-
The US dollar is used as the official currency in El Salvador.
You can exchange money at local airports and banks, but it is recommended to exchange a certain amount before leaving Japan.
In 2021, El Salvador even adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, so digital payments are widespread and you can use credit cards for many transactions.
It's a good idea to carry some cash, especially when visiting markets and similar places.
- Tips
-
Like in the United States, tipping is customary.
For porters and hotel room service, about one dollar is appropriate.
At restaurants and similar establishments, a tip of around 10% is standard.
- Public order
-
Compared to some periods in the past, public safety in El Salvador is improving, but incidents involving gangs and similar groups still occur.
You need to be vigilant against theft, such as robbery, pickpocketing, and bag snatching.
It is recommended to stay at accommodations that meet a certain standard or above.
- clothing
-
The climate is generally hot and humid throughout the year, so light clothing is sufficient. However, it can feel a bit cool at night, so it's a good idea to bring a light jacket.
Overall, casual clothing will help you blend in better. However, when visiting places like churches, please avoid wearing revealing outfits such as tank tops or shorts.
- Things you should bring
- Multi-plug adapter, regular medication, portable battery, overseas travel insurance, sun protection items
- Visa availability and arrangements
-
For stays of up to 90 days for tourism or visiting acquaintances, you can enter El Salvador without obtaining a visa, thanks to the visa exemption agreement between Japan and El Salvador.
Additionally, there is a migration and movement agreement among four Central American countries (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua). Foreign nationals who have legally entered any of these countries for short-term stays can usually travel to and stay in the other three countries for up to 90 days.
- Required vaccinations
-
There are no mandatory requirements for entry.
However, travelers over one year old arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever, or who have transited for more than 12 hours in such countries, are required to present a yellow fever vaccination certificate (Yellow Card).
It is also recommended to get vaccinated against malaria before your trip.
