Overall it was good

After this trip, I realized that visiting South America's famous tourist spots on my own would be quite difficult, so I’m glad I hired a guide.
On the other hand, I think I should have researched the hotels a bit more and discussed them during the planning stage. Being able to book just the hotel myself would have been helpful both in terms of cost and personal preference. (Although I’m not sure about the cost since I don’t know the price for just the hotel this time.)

Before departure, the direct flight from La Paz to Santiago was canceled and changed to a connecting flight, but I also heard locally that the direct flight hasn’t been operating for some time. I’m not sure if that’s true, but if it really isn’t running now, I wish I had been accurately informed during the planning stage.

I was told there was no need to worry about rabies, so I didn’t get vaccinated, but there were a lot of stray-looking dogs everywhere. The risk of being bitten was probably low, but it still made me a bit uneasy.

When I had diarrhea and stomach pain, the guide in Machu Picchu and Cusco was extremely kind and flexible, and took great care of me, which was very helpful.
On the other hand, I should have been more careful with the fish in the Peruvian ceviche, which I think caused my stomach pain. I later heard that quite a few Japanese people get food poisoning from it. I was tired of greasy food, so I ate it all because it was light and delicious, but that probably wasn’t a good idea. It would have been helpful if the restaurant had explained that this dish can cause food poisoning for some people.

The guide at the Uyuni Salt Flats was also very dedicated and left a good impression.
The other guides were generally kind as well, though some of the more experienced ones seemed a bit set in their ways, and I felt they could have been a bit more attentive.

The exhaust fumes in La Paz were terrible, and after my stomach issues, I got even sicker from an allergy to the fumes. I had taken proper precautions against altitude sickness, so that wasn’t much of a problem, but I hadn’t anticipated the air pollution. I think it would have been good to be informed about this in advance.

Even though I took motion sickness medicine, I almost got sick during the Cessna flight over the Nazca Lines. It seems the flight times can’t be freely chosen and are hard to adjust, but boarding soon after lunch might be tough.

Although I fell ill and it was a physically challenging trip, I was able to smoothly see once-in-a-lifetime sights, so overall, I think it was a good experience.

Perfect support for solo travelers

This was a solo trip to Bolivia. I’ve been to South America several times, but there have always been some minor issues, so I was always torn between joining a Japanese tour or arranging everything myself. This time, I found Oooh through a search. Hiring a private guide for a solo trip is certainly expensive, but since I was able to book a cheap flight on my own, the total cost was less than a package tour. The guide spoke perfect English, so communication was never a problem, and I felt the price was fair.
Both the local guide and driver were wonderful people, and I don’t think I could have found such a great company on my own. I’d definitely like to use their services again for my next solo trip.

Even though I prepared medicine and other supplies for Bolivia, I still suffered from altitude sickness for about three days. I had to trek while struggling to catch my breath, but thanks to the support I received, I was able to complete the entire itinerary safely. I’m very grateful.

My only complaint is that during my transit in Lima, I booked a one-day tour but ended up returning to the airport much earlier than I expected. I had informed them of my flight, so I assumed the schedule would be adjusted accordingly, but I should have confirmed this myself. The tour itself was excellent, but I ended up waiting at the airport for 10 hours and wished I could have enjoyed more of Lima.

All the guides were truly wonderful—friendly like old friends, and also professional, providing detailed explanations and answering all my questions.
I’ve completely fallen in love with Bolivia and definitely want to visit again!

It was really good.

It was great to travel individually rather than as part of a group.

Since childhood, I have always been interested in other countries. Even after I started earning my own money in university and later in society, I would spend my free time thinking about where I wanted to go next. (Though I didn’t have much money, so I couldn’t often travel outside Japan...) Sometimes, I would set off from Narita alone, with only a plane ticket in hand and just a rough plan.
Now, I find myself living in South America—something I never imagined. These days, I truly feel that you never know what life has in store.
However, after starting my life in Ecuador and discovering its wonderful tourism resources and traditional crafts, I began to wish that more people around the world could learn about them. Hoping to contribute, even in a small way, to the country's development, I decided to join a local travel agency.
A place you might think of as 'the other side of the world'—so far away—may feel much closer once you visit. Let’s leave everyday life behind and share new encounters and experiences together. I look forward to welcoming you on the other side of the world.

What kind of country is Bolivia?

Bolivia is an inland country in South America with a land area about 3.3 times that of Japan and a population of about 10 million people.
Although it has no coast, diverse nature such as the Andes Mountains and savannas spreads around La Paz.
Among them, the most famous tourist attraction is the Uyuni Salt Flats located in the capital city, La Paz.
The phenomenon known as the 'mirror effect,' where the sky is reflected on the Uyuni Salt Flats, is quite difficult to witness—it requires rain, a layer of water, and clear skies the following day. However, the awe you feel when you do see it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In addition, there are many other historical sites that evoke a sense of history, such as the Fortress of Samaipata and the Potosí Silver Mine.

Cash, cards and currency exchange
・You cannot exchange Japanese yen directly for Bolivianos. Therefore, be sure to obtain US dollars in Japan beforehand and exchange them for local currency upon arrival.
・In Bolivia, there are few places where you can use international cash cards, credit cards, or US dollars. However, as the country becomes more popular as a tourist destination and the number of visitors increases, more places are starting to accept credit cards. Since credit card fees are generally lower than those for currency exchange, it is recommended to use credit cards where possible.
・Many places such as transportation, souvenir shops, and hotels only accept cash, so it is important to exchange a bit more money than you think you'll need.
Tips
- Tipping is customary.
・Restaurants: 10% of the bill
・Taxis: If the driver helps with your luggage at the airport or similar locations, tip Bs.5–8
・If you stay at a luxury hotel, be sure to tip for services such as bed-making or room service.
Public order
・The South American continent, where Bolivia is located, is generally not considered very safe.
・According to the 'World's Safest Countries Ranking' published by the American magazine Global Finance, Bolivia ranks 81st, so it cannot be considered a particularly safe region.
・To avoid becoming a victim of crime, take safety precautions such as avoiding walking alone at night, keeping your valuables with you at all times, and not using your smartphone while walking. There is also a possibility, however small, of incidents such as terrorism, so be sure to check the latest information released by the embassy or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
clothing
・Bolivia is a country with significant temperature differences between day and night. Due to its high altitude, the sun is very strong during the day, so sunscreen is essential. If you are visiting the Uyuni Salt Flats, a long-sleeved T-shirt is usually enough in town, but since the wind can feel chilly, it's a good idea to bring something to wear over it for extra comfort.
Things you should bring
・Stomach medicine, cold medicine, mobile battery, insect repellent, sun protection items, etc.
Visa availability and arrangements
・For short-term stays of up to 30 days for tourism purposes, a visa is not required. Additionally, if you apply for an extension while in Bolivia, you can stay for up to 90 days in a year.
・If you are traveling to Bolivia via the United States, please note that you will need an ESTA to enter the U.S.
Required vaccinations
・There are no mandatory requirements for travel. However, vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, rabies, and yellow fever are recommended.
