This itinerary tracing the origins of Buddhism proceeds after arrival in Delhi with a fast train to Lucknow and then by private car to sites associated with the Buddha. First, visit Maya Devi Temple and the Ashoka Pillar in Lumbini, Nepal, symbolizing the birthplace. Next, make a pilgrimage to the site of parinirvana in Kushinagar, and in Varanasi experience the evening Ganga Aarti on the Ganges and a dawn boat ride the following morning to feel the presence of water and prayer. At Sarnath (Deer Park) see the ruins and museum associated with the Buddha’s first turning of the wheel of Dharma. Continue to Bodh Gaya for worship and meditation at the Mahabodhi Temple, and also visit the Niranjana River and the village of Sujata, linking the four great sacred sites of birth, enlightenment, first turning of the wheel, and parinirvana in a single continuous route.
