Cash, cards and currency exchange

・ When exchanging money, exchange Japan yen for US dollars or euros in advance, and exchange it for bull locally. In terms of circulation, the US dollar and euro are higher, so the exchange rate is also good. In addition, there are places where you can shop in US dollars without exchanging money, so it is better to exchange money while watching the situation.
・Credit cards can be used at hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops, etc. However, there are times when you can't use a card, such as a small shop or taxi, so be sure to carry cash with you, and it is recommended that you use a card and cash together when sightseeing.

Tips

Tipping is generally not customary, but sometimes it is necessary.
・Luxury hotels: 5 birr when luggage is carried
・High-end restaurants: About 10% of the price if service charge is not included
・ Guide: 50 ~ 100 birr if the price is not decided
・ Driver when chartering a car: 50~100 birr per day

Public order

・Please stay away from the border areas with Ektoria and Somalia, the border areas of Gambella Province, Somali Region, West Hararge District of Oromia Province, part of Amhara Region, part of Oromia Region, Gambella Region, etc., which are considered dangerous areas.
・ Minor crimes such as pickpocketing and snatching are also frequent, and tourists are especially easy targets, so be careful.
・ Many people in Ethiopia drive roughly, and there are no pedestrian bridges or pedestrian crossings, so please be careful about traffic accidents. Walking, walking while looking at a smartphone or guide map is very dangerous, so please do not do it.

・ It depends on the season and region, but in general, it is recommended to wear light clothes that are easy to move around. Especially if you're visiting the highlands, bring a light jacket or sweater as it gets cold in the mornings and evenings.
・Also, from a religious point of view, you should avoid wearing clothes that expose a lot of skin. Women, in particular, should wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees.

・Gastrointestinal medicines, cold medicines, mobile batteries, insect repellent goods, sun protection goods, wet wipes, tissues, etc.

Visa availability and arrangements

・Obtaining a visa is required.
・For tourism purposes, a single tourist visa (valid for 1 month) or a multiple tourist visa (valid for 3 months) will be issued depending on the application. You can get a visa at the airport for US$50 at the time of entry, but the immigration visa section may be closed at midnight, so be sure to get it in Japan in advance.

Required vaccinations

・There is no mandatory travel, but vaccination against yellow fever, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, meningitis, rabies, typhoid fever, etc. is recommended.
